Sometime last year I had mentioned to a friend of mine that I really wanted to go out to Mount Rushmore. She and her system hatched a scheme that would take us out over Memorial Day weekend. This plan was ultimately pushed back a couple of months and we decided on Labor Day weekend.

We left very early on a Saturday morning, arriving in Custer late in the day (approximately 3:00 pm). It had been a VERY long ride in the car and as it is often very difficult for me to sit still for any true length of time, I thought I did quite well. When we arrived it was not really optimal conditions for photography. The sun was off to the west and cast down some of the most horrific shadows you could ever imagine. Let's not even start with the colors! We stayed at the park until the night time, watching a short presentation on the history of the park, with the climax being a lighting show... Where they gradually light up the 4 heads. It was pretty neat. We had planned to get up early the next morning and drive back to get some additional shots of the monument, which turned out to be the best idea. We first stopped and got a profile of George Washington, and then we decided to park illegally (I admit it, it was my idea -- but in my defense it did say "Administrator Parking Only" and I am an "administrator", well, system admin but no one needs to know the difference and it didn't ask otherwise.) Upon entering the park I noticed a few mountain goats grazing along the path, so we spent a few minutes enjoying their presence before waltzing back into the park and up the long walk to the 4 heads viewing platform. It was great. The sun was behind us, allowing for rich blue tones in the sky. Perfect photographic conditions.

We finally decided it was time to head back to Custer and pick up Joan's sister, whom we had left at the hotel and headed off for a scenic drive through Custer State Park. We saw only a few animals (no bison ;-( ) and thus headed off on our journey to the Badlands.

At the Badlands, we arrived at just the first stop and walked down to see what this was all about. It was quite nice, though very hot. We noticed a sign indicating their were bison in the area and so we immediately set off in search. We soon found them, after spending time with the prairie dogs. It was awesome and they were impressive.

All in all the trip was spectacular and I really enjoyed my time there. Below are a few photos taken during the trip (more to come in the future, when I find time to finish post processing).

I am very passionate about traveling. My goal is to visit as many places and experience as many things as I can during my short journey on this earth.
