2013: A Year In Review

In 2013 I ended up flying a grand total of 35,679 miles over the course of 27 flight segments. Not too bad if I say so myself.

First up was a trip to Germany and the Netherlands to visit family & friends. I spent the first couple of days in Dresden, Germany with friends who I met while traveling in Peru back in 2002. I have been to Dresden a couple of other times to visit with them and we always have a really great time. They usually try to take me to another city in their area and this year they chose to take me to Gölitz. A beautiful city that sits on the border with Poland. After spending a few days in Dresden I flew back to Amsterdam and then the following day flew off to Frankfurt and traveled through the Rheingau region to Rüdesheim, Germany with friends who I met in South Africa in 2009. I then spent a few days in the Netherlands visting with friends & family.

After this trip, my major trip was off to Myanmar. Originally my flights were supposed to be to fly from Minneapolis to Tokyo, Japan and then on to Yangon, Myanmar via Bangkok, Thailand. However, due to the fates beyond our control, the day before I was scheduled to leave there were some attacks at Los Angeles International Airport. This caused a bit of a backlog of flights, as the airport shut down for a day. Due to the backlog, Delta Air Lines was seeking volunteers to fly the following day. Thinking about it I got really quite crafty and volunteerd to be bumped from this flight, as I had a little bit of extra time in Bangkok before I was to fly to Myanmar. They offered me a $1000 credit voucher and I suggested that maybe they could fly me to Amsterdam and then on to Bangkok with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. They agreed to this and I was able to begin my travel. I just needed to spend a full day in the Netherlands before I could leave for Bangkok; no problem for me. I ended up having a great time in Myanmar, with extremely friendly people and a wonderful atmosphere for travel. After 28 days in Myanmar (the maximum amount of time for my visa), I spent the last 2 days in Chiang Mai, Thailand before flying back home via Bangkok & Tokyo.

At the conclusion of this trip, I had circumnavigated the globe in one trip; something I had not done prior to this trip. Minneapolis - Amsterdam - Bangkok - Tokyo - Minneapolis
