2015 Flights Purchased: Tanzania

The great debacle continues over the use of frequent flyer miles. I finally made the decision that this was the year that I was going to go to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. I had decided a long time ago that I was going to use miles.

So when the first came I decided it was time to look into the tickets. I looked at Delta's website and determined that I was going to need about 140,000 miles for the roundtrip ticket in Business Class. Knowing that this is rarely going to happen I set off on my adventure of finding the tickets with the fewest number of miles. I punched in MSP as my starting point and JRO as the ending point. The results: Not so good. It would seem that they wanted 210,000 miles. To add insult to injury they wanted to put me into Economy Class on the sector from Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro Airport. Sorry, for 210,000 miles, not going to happen. I then changed the airports a little and was able to find decent prices into Nairobi, but Delta wanted to fly me to Portland or Seattle before flying me to Amsterdam. This makes zero sense to me.

Shortly thereafter I put a thread up on Flyer Talk and within a few minutes people were helping me locate optimal tickets for decent prices. In the end I was able to get tickets starting & ending at JFK. My outbound ends in Nairobi, Kenya. From here I'll take a shuttle to Moshi, Tanzania. The return flies via London, England and on to JFK with Virgin Atlantic. I purchased a separate economy class ticket from Minneapolis to JFK.

In the end, I only had to spend 165,000 miles; instead of the minimum 210,000 miles that they quoted me each time I searched with start & final end points in Minneapolis.
